#posters #DES101

I thought about the haiku differently, I pictured a breeze blowing at the beach and “the art of floating” came to me, a perfect title for a horror movie! I drew inspiration from The Shining and A Cure For Wellness.

I used hand drawn and digital techniques which I explored more through adding text and gradients. The key elements of the poster are saturated to give off a harsh, cold feeling. (Chapman, 2010) The contrast of pure red stands out as the warmer hue comes forward towards the viewer (Skaalid, 1999) and I used asymmetrical typography to express a sense of floating. (Dabner & Swann)

The hand is a signifier, it’s position signifies a kind, helping hand. In combination with dripping blood and a dark background, it now signifies something mysterious and eerie, “meaning moves due to a signifier calling on multiple signifieds.” (Hodge, 2003)

The composition wasn’t dynamic in my first attempts, I wasn’t playing around with the elements enough, scared of failure. Once I did though, immediately the poster became balanced and dynamic, I used the rule of thirds as a guide, “compositions become more dynamic when divided into thirds.” (Dabner & Swann p. 37) I can’t be afraid of trying new things and letting go of what I already have.
